Cold Saltwater Hydrotherapy
COLD SALTWATER HYDROTHERAPY

For centuries horses have stood in cold running streams or walked in the sea to aid in the treatment and prevention of leg problems. Today’s hydrotherapy options have expanded on the natural healing effects of water to assist us in treating the most common causes of lameness in horses.

Hydrotherapy through the use of Cold Saltwater Hydrotherapy Spas and Aqua Treadmills has rapidly established a reputation for resolving and preventing lameness much faster than normal. Both forms of therapy work effectively in conjunction with conventional treatments.

Pain, heat and swelling the three main symptoms associated with injury are your horses way of dealing with trauma associated with strains, cuts or bruises. Pain helps prevent overuse of the area, heat is the result of increased blood flow to the site, and swelling helps immobilise the area.

After the primary traumatic injury, inflammation can in many cases complicate the healing process by causing secondary tissue damage or hypoxic injury, when decreased and impaired blood flow starves healthy tissues surrounding the injury site of oxygen. As more cells are damaged and die, more fluids are drawn out of blood vessels, leading to additional swelling and a cycle that can slow your horse’s recovery.

The safest simplest way to break the destructive cycle of secondary cell injury and the excess swelling is to use the horse's circulatory system to sweep away excess fluids that have collected in the tissues. Cold Salt Water Hydrotherapy Spas utilize cold temperature, salt, water depth and aeration to encourage the horse’s natural healing processes to operate more efficiently, speeding the healing process.

Spa water is regulated at a low temperature of between 2 and 4°C.  This cold water temperature reduces swelling, numbs pain and slows down the degeneration of damaged tissues. The high salt concentration has a great drawing effect, thereby influencing the dispersal of fluids accumulated around the injury. The specific mixture of salts used in the Spa also aids in further influencing the healing process.

The physical pressure exerted on the tissues by the water depth helps in the dispersal of accumulated fluids. Aeration increases oxygen levels in the water and aids the healing process, while the massaging effect further influences dispersal of fluids.

By reducing swelling and encouraging damaged tissues to begin repairing, Spa therapy triggers the start of the healing process. After a Spa treatment, cold remains in the legs for up to four hours post treatment. Once initial swelling is reduced, continued Spa treatments can control any further swelling that may interfere with healing. Regular use of the Spa can greatly reduce everyday stresses and strains that could develop into more serious injuries.

The Cold Saltwater Hydrotherapy Spa is a useful therapeutic process for tendon and ligament injuries, joint problems, relieving arthritis, founder, sore shins, cuts, wounds, general swellings and stiffness, and promoting hoof growth. If there is inflammation, heat, pain or swelling the Cold Salt Water Hydrotherapy Spa is the ideal therapy.
